The Colosseum is one of the Seven Wonders of the New World. This building is a large performance building or called the Amphitheater. Colosseum is located in Rome, Italy. This building was originally called the Flavian Amphitheater because it was built by Emperor Vespasian of the Flavian family. The construction of the Colloseum began in 70 BC. The Colosseum was completed in 82 BC in the time of Titus, son of Emperor Vespasian. The name Colosseum is taken from the name of Nero's large statue, Colossus. This statue is 40 meters high. Some historians believe that the construction of the Colosseum was funded by the results of robbing Hindu temples in Jerusalem during the time of Emperor Herod in 64 BC.
This building is designed to accommodate 50,000 spectators. Seating in the Colosseum is divided into three parts. At the first level there is a podium which is reserved for senators. At the same level, a special seat for the emperor was placed and room for the emperor to rest and store his wealth. The top level of the podium is for the nobles and knights. And the third level is for ordinary citizens. Seats on the third level are divided into two parts. The places below are for the rich and the place in the upper rows for the poor.
The Colosseum was used until 217. Within a few centuries, this building was damaged by lightning and several earthquakes. Now, the part of the building that still remains is one of Rome's most popular attractions in the eyes of tourists. Every year, millions of tourists visit this place.
Colosseum in the past was a venue for spectacular performances such as battles between wild beasts, battles between prisoners and animals, battles in water by filling the arena with water, and battles between gladiators or prisoners of war. During the 100-day Colosseum opening event, 9,000 wild animals died. And in 100 years, an estimated 1,000 people died because of the show.
